Part
Man. Part Machine. Total Weapon.
Mario Van
Peebles stars as a force of one in SOLO, the high-tech adventure
about an Army android who learns to think - and kill - for
himself.
The Army's
biggest threat since the atom bomb, Solo is an indestructible
android wired to win every battle. But when innocent civilians
are torched by his unit, Solo discovers he's on the wrong side
of an illegal operation.
Now the Army's
ultimate weapon is waging a one-man war against his own
creators.

General
Clyde Haynes. Barry plays the
commanding officer of a top secret project code named
"Solo", a cyborg
soldier. Haynes is proud of the new killing machine his team has
created and received accolades for his work by top government
officials. Problems develop however as the cyborg develops feelings
in his first mission against
a guerrilla force in a small South American country. Haynes
orders Bill (Adrien Brody) to "fix" Solo, but the
cyborg foils his plans by joining the guerrilla force. With 2
Billion dollars invested and his reputation, Haynes is
determined to retrieve his 'property' and sends out specialists
to recapture and recover "Solo".
Barry filmed
this project on location in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. It was one
of his first major films after the TV series "Northern
Exposure" wrapped up production in 1995. Barry's portrayal
of Haynes is a marked departure from his role of General
Beringer in
"War Games". Throughout the movie you are
never quite sure if Haynes is a patriot or if he has a hidden
agenda. Efficient and ruthless, Haynes is the perfect soldier
for the job. |

GEN.
HAYNES : SOLO is the perfect soldier. He's proficient at all
types of combat. He has no family, no friends, not even a
social security number. If he's wounded beyond repair, we
throw him away. No guilt, no worries, no medical benefits. No
one will cry when SOLO is gone. We'll simply build another
one.
GEN.
HAYNES : That's enough! SOLO, you're dismissed.
GEN.
HAYNES : Bill, there's something cooking in that boy's head,
and we didn't put it there.
BILL : General, we needed him to think for himself. The simple
but amazing fact here is that killing innocent people makes
SOLO feel bad.
GEN.
HAYNES : FEEL BAD? He isn't supposed to feel anything! He's a
GODDAMN WEAPON! When's he going to start acting like one?
GEN.
HAYNES : At ease, Colonel! Look, Bill, we
have $2 billion tied up in this program. When you gonna build
us one that'll work?
GEN.
HAYNES : Alright, Bill, fix him! But not here in the field.
Shut him down. Take him back to Palmdale. Reprogram him there.
BILL : General...
GEN.
HAYNES : That's it, Bill.
GEN.
HAYNES : Priority outgoing transmission on Milnet.
OFFICER : Yes, sir.
GEN.
HAYNES : Well, Captain, time to get out of Dodge.
GEN.
HAYNES : Blue One, this is Red Six Actual. Return to base
immediately. That's a direct order.
SOLO : I am sorry, General Haynes, but I am unable to comply.
GEN. HAYNES : Go find him. Bring him back here before somebody
else get their hands on him.
COL.
MADDEN : My pleasure.
GEN. HAYNES : In one piece, Colonel. I don't want a scratch on
that shiny head of his. Do you read me?
GEN.
HAYNES : Then you'll have to patch him up, won't you? That's
what you're here for, isn't it? Use your own judgment, Blue
Six.
GEN.
HAYNES : (Sigh) Roger, Blue Six. Go down and pick up the
pieces. We've gotta put Humpty-Dumpty back together again.
GEN.
HAYNES : This is Red Six, is Blue One damaged?
COL.
MADDEN : That's a negative, Red Six.
GEN. HAYNES : Hook him up and bring him home A.S.A.P.
COL.
MADDEN : I
would love to, Red Six, but he is gone.
GEN. HAYNES : Gone? What do you mean, gone?
COL.
MADDEN : Your
boy had slipped his leash. We've lost him.
GEN. HAYNES : GODDAMIT! DON'T YOU PEOPLE HAVE ANYTHING TO DO?
GEN.
HAYNES : When you hunt a fox, bring your own dogs.
GEN.
HAYNES : What's up?
OFFICER :
Sir, we're picking up erratic heat signatures from NEOS. It
looks like a battle.
GEN.
HAYNES : Ha, ha! We got him!
GEN.
HAYNES : Lorenzo's our best tracker. He's on the team. Go
ahead, Lorenzo, get aboard. I want SOLO back in one piece,
Colonel.
BILL : You're
out of your mind if you think this is going to solve anything.
GEN.
HAYNES : We're just keeping our options open.
BILL : What
do you mean, your options? What about SOLO?
GEN.
HAYNES : Unfortunately, SOLO has proven himself to be
unreliable.
BILL : So
I'm resigning. All right? I resign.
GEN.
HAYNES : (Chuckling) If you think that's appropriate!
CAPTAIN
: Excuse me, General. We're receiving a scrambled video signal
coming in from Blue Team leader.
GEN.
HAYNES : Bring it up.
GEN.
HAYNES : Blue Six, you have the authority to capture and bring
SOLO back using any means necessary. I repeat, any means.
BILL : I
designed him, I know how he thinks. Just send me in there --
GEN.
HAYNES : IT WAS YOUR GODDAMN DESIGN THAT GOT US HERE IN THE
FIRST PLACE!!!
COL. MADDEN :
With all due respect, sir.
Bill might be of some use in locating SOLO.
GEN.
HAYNES : You sure?
COL.
MADDEN : Absolutely.
GEN.
HAYNES : All right, you can go, but remember, Madden's in
charge. I don't want any bullshit! You bring him back if you
can. If you can't, I want him to disappear without a trace. I
want this thing over with, now. Go get your gear.
BILL : Thank you, sir.
MADDEN II : First
target has been eliminated, sir.
GEN.
HAYNES : (Chuckling) First rule when dealing with the devil.
MADDEN II
: Repeat,
General.
GEN.
HAYNES : Never mind. Take out target number two.
GEN.
HAYNES : That's a negative, return to base. (Sighs) They're
both gone. (Chuckling) Two billion dollars...down the
crapper...(chuckling).
